Architectural engineers use both theoretical and practical knowledge when designing buildings and building systems. The objective is to design high-performance buildings that ensure occupants’ safety, health, comfort, and productivity while also being resilient, sustainable, and economically viable. Architectural engineers apply their specialized knowledge to conceptualize, design, construct, operate, and maintain built environments in interdisciplinary team settings by combining scientific principles from structural, mechanical, electrical, lighting, acoustical, and construction engineering. Architectural engineering graduates are regarded as creative systems engineers because they have received formal training in creativity and design through architectural design studios combined with a strong engineering education.
